Queensland is kind of known to have luck with its tropical climate and laid back lifestyle and now it may be getting something else pretty enviable.
December 24 could become a public holiday in Queensland after 6pm if the Palaszczuk government gets its way.
Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk announced that while her government can’t reverse the lost weekend penalty rates that the federal government just took from workers, she may be able to “do the right thing for people working on Christmas Eve,” she said in a statement on Sunday.
Under the proposed changes a hospitality industry worker would get about $146 more for working Christmas Eve. It would also give workers the right to have the evening off as a public holiday, just as they do for Christmas Day.
“Many Queenslanders though, do have to work Christmas Eve and the change would ensure proper compensation for them,” Ms Palaszczuk said.
