Real Madrid suffered an embarrassing UEFA Champions League defeat in the hands of Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday night, but Los Blancos forward Karim Benzema walked away from the match having broken a competition record.
Two goals from former Real star Angel Di Maria and another from Thomas Meunier consigned the LaLiga giants to a 3-0 defeat on the night.
Anyway, Benzema walked away with the consolation of setting a new tournament record for the most appearances by a French player in Europe’s showpiece club competition, according to Opta Sports.
The former France international made his 113th Champions League appearance against PSG, and in doing so, broke the record of 112 previously held by former Juventus, Arsenal and FC Barcelona forward Thierry Henry.
The 31-year-old Benzema is still some way behind former Real teammate and all-time record holder Iker Casillas, who has made 177 appearances in the competition so far across his spells with the Spanish giants and Portuguese side FC Porto.
