Prison experts have clarified the reasons behind the separation of controversial crossdresser Idris Okuneye, better known as Bobrisky, from other inmates at the correctional center, denying claims of a VIP section.
On Arise TV’s The Morning Show, Bishop Kayode Williams, Director General of the Prison Rehabilitation Mission, outlined the classification of inmate accommodations. He explained that certain categories, such as condemned prisoners and convicted inmates, have specific housing arrangements to ensure safety and security.
Addressing Bobrisky’s situation, Williams noted, “Given his appearance, he would be in danger if placed in the general cell. He was provided with special accommodations for protective custody to ensure his safety.” He emphasized that Bobrisky’s transgender identity presented unique challenges in a prison environment where some inmates may pose a threat.
Francis Enobore, former National PRO of the Nigerian Correctional Service, supported Williams’ statements, highlighting that inmates are profiled for their protection and the safety of others. He remarked, “While Bobrisky identified as a man in court, his appearance as a woman could lead to serious security issues with other inmates.”
Enobore, however, dismissed rumors that Bobrisky was given a private section, stating, “There’s no such thing as a private apartment or anything special in the prison.”
The controversy surrounding Bobrisky’s incarceration escalated earlier this week after Martins Otse, known as VeryDarkMan, circulated a voice note in which Bobrisky allegedly claimed that arrangements were made for him to serve his six-month sentence in a private apartment following his conviction for misuse of naira notes.
In related news, the Civil Defence, Correctional, Fire and Immigration Services Board announced the suspension of two deputy controllers at the Kirikiri Medium Custodial Centre in Lagos due to allegations of bribery linked to Bobrisky’s case.
