Egbetokun: Why IGP Is Not Not Illegal To Remain In Office – Police

The Nigeria Police Force has dismissed claims that Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, is staying in office illegally, calling them “baseless and misleading”.

The claims, made by activist Omoyele Sowore, alleged that Egbetokun’s tenure had expired. However, the police force countered that Egbetokun’s appointment is “firmly grounded in law” and cited the Police Act, 2020, which states that the Inspector-General of Police serves a four-year term.

According to the police, Egbetokun’s appointment was ratified by the Police Council and confirmed by the Presidency, with his tenure running from October 31, 2023, to October 31, 2027.

The police view Sowore’s claims as an attempt to undermine public trust and foster confusion about the force’s leadership. They caution against spreading misinformation that could compromise national security and urge citizens to focus on objective discussions that promote public safety.
