Former EFCC Chief, Ibrahim Lamorde, Passes Away at 61 in Egypt

Ibrahim Lamorde, the third Executive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), has passed away. Reports from PREMIUM TIMES stated that Lamorde, a former police officer who led the EFCC from 2011 to 2015, died in Egypt while undergoing medical treatment, as per an unnamed source.

The EFCC, however, has yet to officially confirm his demise.

Born on December 20, 1962, Lamorde began his career with the Nigerian Police Force in 1986. He played a pivotal role in the EFCC’s early days, serving as its pioneer Director of Operations upon the agency’s establishment.

Lamorde briefly assumed the role of EFCC Chairman between December 2007 and January 2008 before Farida Waziri’s appointment. He later took on the position again in an acting capacity in November 2011 following Farida Waziri’s removal by President Goodluck Jonathan.

His confirmation as the agency’s third substantive Chairman came on February 15, 2012, after Senate approval. However, he was succeeded by Ibrahim Magu in November 2015, appointed by former President Muhammadu Buhari.

Following his tenure at the EFCC, Lamorde returned to the police force, retiring as Deputy Inspector General in 2021.

Born in Mubi, Adamawa State, on December 20, 1962, Lamorde graduated from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Sociology in 1984.
