India and China Agree to Resume Direct Passenger Flights After 5 Years

India and China have agreed to resume direct passenger flights after a nearly five-year hiatus. This development marks a significant step in improving relations between the two nations, which have been strained since a deadly military clash in 2020.

Before the COVID-19 pandemic, around 500 monthly direct flights operated between China and India. However, tensions escalated after the 2020 border skirmish, leading India to cut passenger flights to mainland China, ban numerous Chinese apps, and limit Chinese investment.

The agreement to resume direct flights was reached during a meeting between India’s Foreign Secretary and China’s Vice Foreign Minister. The relevant technical authorities will meet to negotiate an updated framework for direct air services.

This move is expected to ease travel between the two countries, which currently requires connecting flights through hubs like Hong Kong, Bangkok, or Singapore. The resumption of direct flights could also have economic benefits for both nations.²
