Liverpool are now top of the Premier League after a 1-1 draw with Brighton as Diogo Jota’s clinical finish was cancelled out by a last-gasp penalty by Pascal Gross.
The Red Devils had a goal by Mohamed Salah ruled out for offside in the first half.
Liverpool player ratings
Alisson – 6
You could argue his presence in goal forced Maupay to be extra precise with his penalty. Had little to do in the second half until Brighton got a second penalty of the match and Gross sent the ball past him.
Neco Williams – 5
Fortunate to escape being punished for giving away a penalty when Neal Maupay put his shot wide. Taken off at half-time with Milner moving back into defence.
Fabinho – 7
Struggled at times to deal with the pace and directness of the Brighton forwards but with Liverpool dominating the second half, he was comfortable.
Phillips – 7
A good game by the young defender. Won his aerial duels, rarely gave the ball away and managed Brighton’s threats well.
Robertson – 6
The left-back didn’t get forward as much as he usually does but was largely untroubled defensively until giving away a late penalty for kicking Danny Welbeck’s foot.
Milner – 6
Kept it neat and simple in midfield before being moved to right-back when Neco Williams was taken off at half-time. Forced off with 20 minutes to go with a hamstring injury.
Wijnaldum – 7
Another solid performance by the Dutch midfielder. He is Liverpool’s Mr Reliable right now.
Minamino – 5
Given a rare chance to start but struggled to make an impression. Fortunate to complete the full 90 minutes.
Salah – 7
Had a goal ruled out for offside by the smallest margin in the first half. Provided the assist for Jota and fumed as he was taken off by Jurgen Klopp.
Jota – 8
A quiet first half but he sparked into life in the second with a fine finish to open the scoring. It was his ninth goal in 14 appearances for Liverpool in all competitions.
Firmino – 6
Denied an assist when Salah’s goal was ruled out. The Brazilian was full of nice touches as usual but didn’t have a major impact on the match.
