Premier League Defenders – 2022/23 Power Rankings

There may have been plenty of high scoring games, but that doesn’t mean there haven’t been some immensely impressive defenders in the Premier League so far this season.

From those that have been rock solid at the back, to those that have dazzled at the other end of the pitch, plenty have caught the eye.

Here’s who we think are the best at the moment.

10. Wout Faes (down 1)

Wout Faes has become one of Leicester’s best players since joining, settling in quickly at the heart of the defence.

The Belgian played pretty well in their 1-0 defeat to Manchester City, although he was helped by the fact that Erling Haaland was injured.

9. Thiago Silva (down 4)

Usually, a defender would drop out of the top 10 after conceding four at the weekend, but Thiago Silva also made two goal line clearances, so he just about stays in.

8. Sven Botman (-)

Sven Botman has gotten better and better since joining Newcastle at the start of the season, getting himself into the Netherlands’ provisional World Cup squad.

7. Diogo Dalot (re-entry)

Manchester United fans entered the season wanting a new right-back, but are happy with who they’ve got now.

Diogo Dalot has been excellent going forward and was his team’s most threatening player last time out against West Ham.

6. James Tarkowski (-)

Forming a strong partnership with Conor Coady, James Tarkowski has been excellent at the back since joining Everton, with some calling for him to go to the World Cup.

He was the best outfield player on the pitch in his team’s 0-0 draw with Everton.

5. Joao Cancelo (down 1)

Cancelo continues to dazzle for Manchester City, thriving on whichever side he plays on, being a creative force to be reckoned with.

After making a mistake that lost his team the match with Liverpool, he’s bounced back well since.

4. Fabian Schar (down 1)

Newcastle have the best defensive record in the league, conceding the fewest goals and keeping the most clean sheets, and that’s largely down to Fabian Schar. The 30-year-old has been imperious at the centre of defence.

3. Lisandro Martinez (up 4)

Man Utd have conceded just once in their last four games, despite playing three of the league’s top six in them, thanks in large part to Lisandro Martinez, who is blowing the minds of British pundits everywhere by proving that size doesn’t *actually* matter.

2. William Saliba (-)

Arsenal’s defence was generally good last season, but William Saliba has taken it to the next level since returning from Marseille.

The Frenchman has started every Premier League match and has been near-flawless at the back.

1. Kieran Trippier (-)

Many thought we’d seen the best of Kieran Trippier when he left Tottenham in 2019, but that hasn’t been the case.

The full-back was once again hugely impressive against Aston Villa, creating one goal and a number of chances.
