Beatrice Ekweremadu, the wife of former Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu, has returned to Nigeria after being released from a UK prison.
She was sentenced to six years in prison in May 2023 for her involvement in organ harvesting, alongside her husband and Dr. Obinna Obeta.¹ The trio was found guilty of trafficking a 21-year-old Nigerian to the UK for the purpose of harvesting his kidney, a crime under the UK’s Modern Slavery Act 2015.²
Beatrice’s release comes after serving part of her sentence, although the exact duration is unclear. Her husband, Ike Ekweremadu, was sentenced to 10 years in prison, while Dr. Obinna Obeta received a similar sentence. The case marked the first conviction under the UK’s Modern Slavery Act 2015.
