SIMON Ekpa: All You Need To Know About His Arrest, Detention And Extradition Process

Nigerians in Finland are expressing fear following the arrest of separatist leader Simon Ekpa, a prominent figure in the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

Finnish authorities detained Ekpa and four others on charges of incitement to violence, financing terrorism, and other terror-related activities.

Fear and Tension Among Nigerians

Sources reveal that Nigerians, particularly the Igbo community in Finland, are hesitant to comment on Ekpa’s detention due to fears of retribution. A Nigerian community leader, speaking anonymously, said the Igbo community has been severely impacted by violent actions associated with IPOB.

“There’s widespread fear. Key figures in the community are unwilling to speak out, as those accused of reporting Ekpa to authorities are already facing threats,” the source disclosed.

Another resident highlighted the tension, stating, “People fear being targeted by his followers. The Finnish Government is actively working to address the situation.”

Charges Against Ekpa

Ekpa, who claims to be the “Prime Minister of the Biafra Republic Government-in-Exile,” has been accused of promoting violence in Nigeria’s southeast region. He allegedly used social media to incite attacks on civilians and authorities, enforcing sit-at-home orders that disrupted daily life.

Finnish authorities arrested him alongside four accomplices, with Finland’s National Bureau of Investigation confirming that Ekpa is suspected of incitement to commit crimes with terrorist intent.

Global Outcry and Nigerian Government Response

Ekpa’s activities have drawn international condemnation, with petitions urging Finland, Nigeria, and the European Union to take action. Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned Finland’s Ambassador to address the threats posed by Ekpa.

The Ministry described the arrest as a significant step in curbing IPOB’s influence, stating, “This development is crucial in neutralizing the impact of transnational actors on our national security.”

Mixed Reactions From IPOB and Other Groups

IPOB’s spokesperson, Emma Powerful, expressed relief at the arrest, blaming Ekpa for insecurity in the South-East. “People can finally rest. He and his gang have caused untold suffering,” Powerful said, adding that IPOB disowns Ekpa.

Conversely, the Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) said it is consulting with other groups to determine its position.

Extradition and Legal Challenges

The Nigerian government has indicated plans to extradite Ekpa to face charges. However, experts note challenges, as Finland and Nigeria lack a formal extradition treaty.

Ambassador Yemi Farounbi explained that multilateral agreements and diplomatic relations could facilitate extradition, but Finland’s courts would prioritize its legal framework and national interests.

Hunt for Sponsors

Nigerians online are also calling for the identification of those funding Ekpa’s alleged activities. Social media users have pledged to report donors, particularly those in the U.S., to authorities for accountability.

Simon Ekpa’s arrest marks a significant development in efforts to address IPOB’s activities, but it has also triggered tension within Nigerian communities abroad. As investigations unfold, the Nigerian and Finnish governments face the challenge of balancing justice, diplomacy, and security.
