‘Squid Game’ Actor Lee Joo Sil Dies At 81

Korean actress Lee Joo Sil, best known for her role as Park Mal Soon in the second season of Netflix’s hit series “Squid Game,” has passed away at the age of 81.

Going by her talent agency, 1230Culture, Lee died on Sunday at St. Mary’s Hospital in Uijeongbu, South Korea, due to complications from a recent stomach cancer diagnosis.

Born on March 8, 1944, in Bucheon, South Korea, Lee had a illustrious career spanning over five decades. She began her career in Korean live theater in 1965, with notable stage roles in local productions of “Death of a Salesman” and “Macbeth.” Lee’s film and television credits include “Train to Busan,” “The Uncanny Counter,” and “Loving You a Thousand Times,” among others.

Interestingly, Lee was first diagnosed with terminal breast cancer in 1993 but defied expectations and lived for another three decades. Unfortunately, she faced a recurrence of cancer in November 2024, which led to her passing. Lee will be buried in Seoul, tomorrow, February 5, as reported by Korean media.
