A United Nations Youth Envoy has dissociated herself and office from Williams Uchemba, the Nollywood actor who claims to be a Nigerian Youth Representative at the United Nation Youth Assembly.
This came after US-based Nigerian activist, Edafe Okporo called out the Nollywood actor for posing as an ambassador to collect money from unsuspecting Nigerians. Edafe who called the Nollywood actor a scammer had initially written;
He claims to be a @UN youth rep. Because of @FriendshipAmbas pretentious youth assembly deceit to thousands of young people. His name is @williamsuchemba” Edafe tweeted
This is a cheap scam for so many young Nigerians and youth all around the world. @FriendshipAmbas is collecting money in the name of @UNYouthEnvoy @UNDPINGO He his posing to be an ambassador. Using the reputation of the @UN
A UN Youth Envoy also dissociated herself and office from Williams Uchemba when contacted. According to Jayathma Wickramanayake, the UN does not charge money from young people to attend the UN meetings. She wrote;
Thanks for bringing this to my attention. Me or my office has no affiliation with this person. The UN definitely does not charge money from young people to attend UN meetings. Also the youth assembly is not a UN meeting, it’s organized by an NGO at the UN. I will ask my comms team to prepare the necessary communication messages to save young people from scams like these
